Blog Four, I'm Working On It

Hello, back again!

In my last post I identified my strengths and weaknesses, it wasn't an easy task, for someone who has battled low self esteem my entire life identifying strengths doesn't come naturally, and as for weaknesses, well, we live in a world where it is dangerous and frowned upon to show vulnerability so admitting flaws is a tricky task as well.

However, like I said before, it's only by acknowledging our pit-falls that we allow ourselves to develop! So with that in mind, I'm going to focus on one of those weaknesses and discuss what it is I plan to do going forward in order to grow.

The one that I've chosen to focus on is my inability to say no.

The issue is, that it's a constant battle in my mind of needing to be the one that people can count on accompanied by the fear that at this point in my career what else do I have to offer? BUT, that is just the lack of confidence talking. So really the first thing that I need to focus on is recognising my own value, what it is that I truly have to offer, and stop relying on others to tell me what I am worth.

A key way to gain more confidence is to gain more experience, part of the reason why I am doing this degree is to get more training with cameras and more opportunities to grow as a director. With each new film creation my confidence and sense of worth grows, allowing me to value my time more.

The third thing that I need to do is a very logical approach; Work out a schedule with a healthy work/life balance, now for me, schedules are not something I like to stick by, yet, sometimes structure is important and in this case setting boundaries of the hours I can work in a week allowing for enough time of rest and fun, will really benefit me and help me to take more control of my time.

That's the plan anyway! Saying no is a scary thing to do in the early years of a career but not starting now will make it harder to do later. Saying no can be empowering, because it can enable saying yes to opportunities that will help excel a career!
