Hello,

Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Ruth, I'm a filmmaker in my 20s. I'm passionate about film and the impact it has in today's society. My other loves include (in no particular order) travel, photography, family, coffee and cooking!

My interest in a career in film first surfaced as an ambition to be an actress, but through a few projects when I got the opportunity to go behind the camera I realised there is so much power and creativity in being the director, the cinematographer, the editor, and I started searching for more and more opportunities to gain experience in creating films.

Early experiences of being the sound operator - 2015

There are so many roles within the film industry, and I have loved experiencing the production processes from earliest conceptions to editing the finishing touches. However my main goal continues to be directing. It's the directors vision and voice that brings the story to life and that excites me more than anything else. I believe the best directors have an empathy and understanding of the many different parts that make up a film so I intend to continue gaining a broad experience.

My First Time as the DoP - 2015

It's always been my dream to use film to voice the unheard stories. I hope, over the course of my career, to make a mixture of documentary and fictional feature and short films that bring an important message to the screen, compelling real emotion in the audience and affecting change within the world.

Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom (Rotten Tomatoes)

There are plenty of role models to look up to within the creative industry and I have been inspired by many different creators over the years. One in particular would be writer/director Aaron Sorkin. His high quality screenplays brought beautifully to the screen tell a provoking story, in a meaningful social commentary style. The world he creates is captivating, the characters he writes are human and inspirational and each one of his films or television episodes brings a message to the audience through the story and exquisitely composed shots.

Another inspiration for me is Ava DuVernay, she has the same purpose to her career that I want for mine, to uncover and tell the unheard stories. Her documentary 13th was so impactful, the message constantly sticks with me making me want to share it with everyone!

Both these creators give something back to the world and use the powerful voice of film to make a difference, and if that's not something to be inspired by, then I don't know what is!
