We all learnt from either maths or ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ that there are an infinite amount of numbers between 1 and 2: 1.1, 1.2, 1.21 etc etc but there are a bigger amount of infinite numbers between 1 and 10, therefore; some infinities are bigger than other infinities, and yesterday I had an infinity that lasted all of one stop on the central line during Friday morning rush hour.
For those of you who have never experienced the delights of London between the hours of 7-9am and 5-7pm Monday to Friday, all I can say is that you get an idea for the sheer volume of our 8 billion population, especially when they’re all trying to go through bank underground station at the same time, or so it feels. You have to somewhat surrender your personal space, at least if you want some chance of getting in the carriage…
And that’s where I found myself yesterday morning, the same as the day before, and the day before that and where I will once again find myself on Monday, sandwiched in amongst the throng of many more humans all in haste to get to work. Now there’s a kind of unspoken set of rules on the tube: take up as little space as possible, don’t talk, and don’t make eye contact!
But yesterday morning my eyes found another pair of eyes that made the last rule impossible to follow.
We were stood there, maybe 20cm from each other and in front of me, looking back into mine, were the most brilliant pair of green eyes! They were magical, I knew I should look away but I couldn’t, I just wanted to keep looking…
And that’s how we stood the whole way between Bank and St. Paul’s, in full violation of the 3rd unspoken rule, staring into each other’s eyes, which have been called the gateway to the soul, suddenly the tube didn’t feel so full, it was just us.
When we reached the stop, he smiled at me and then shuffled his way off the tube. I don’t know his name, I will never see him again, but that doesn’t matter because we had our little infinity right then and there. Thank you, Mr Green Eyes.
